What you need to know before you go

You will need to purchase a recreation access permit and review the IEP rules of use. There are 4 types of permits available:  Individual annual ($50), Family annual ($80), Daily motorized ($15/vehicle), and Non-motorized daily ($2.50/person). Permits may be purchased from our network of local vendors.

Empire Trails is now open. 

Empire Trails (non-motorized bicycle and hiking trail) located near Spirit Lake. Daily non-motorized permit $2.50 or purchase an annual permit for unimited use.


Weather conditions in mountainous terrain is subject to sudden changes. We recommend that you be prepared for wet, cold, and windy conditions even during summer months.


For those accessing back country behind closed gates during our off season, be aware that changing snow conditions can make travel treacherous.  What you can travel over during the early morning hours can become soft and uncrossable by mid morning.


We strongly advise that you share your planned route and itinerary with a responsible person. If you are the responsible person and someone you know has not returned when expected, call our 24 hour hotline at 866-437-7722.

Reminder, firewood cutting is closed until Memorial Day Weekend.


ALERT!  Heavy logging truck traffic on the Twin Lakes Road.  Hauls are originating off of the M6 and the M7, both of which are closed to all public access, including all motorized vehicles.  Roads are plowed and gates are open for truck traffic.  This does not mean the public has access because loaded trucks cannot stop for you on the icy roads!  Commercial operations are ongoing 7 days a week.  At this time, parking is allowed in the snowplow turn around area and access to 50" or less in width tracked vehicles is allowed beyond the Fish Creek gate.




You must carry fire equipment. (bucket, shovel and fire extinguisher)


Speed limit is maximum 25 MPH.




Please check each land owners page for updated information concerning the fire dangers and restrictions.

ATV's must be 50" or less to go around closed gates.
